Some tips on using some of the sites... The Trainline
- Rail fares in UK are not cheap(!) but there
are ways to greatly minimize your costs. 1/ Book at least 7 days
in advance if possible. 2/ 'Day return' fares for shorter
trips are
good value. Book them for departures after 9am. 3/ If you are
traveling to a smaller town, check the fares to the nearest
larger centre and add on the shorter section. Discounted fares
are often only to the more major centres. E.G. York to Windsor
may be cheaper if you search for York to London and then add
London to Windsor. The more major routes are the most often
discounted. National Express Bus
Services - Rates are better than trains
but services are slower and you have less room and comfort. I
would suggest only using Natex for journeys of up to 2 hours,
especially if you like your comfort! Younger travelers may fare
better, and find it worth the savings. A word about the terminal
at Heathrow. They have a wierd system there! About 5-10 mins
before your bus is due to leave, go through to the bus departure
area and wait until your bus with your route # pulls in. Don't wait
in the waiting area for your bus # to show up. Other larger bus
terminals may have a similar system...I just know from bitter
experience that Heathrow can be confusing! Always ask for
information if you are at all unsure. (Did you hear that, men?)
